Someone mentioned asparagus, and I do want an asparagus patch that I

My reply:

My unsolicited advice on this topic would be to control the natural
impulse to get the asparagus in next spring. My suggestion is to get
any sod or weeds out now, amend the soil, soil sterilize the trench, and
spread the soil that will fill the trench(about 2/12 times the volumes of
what you think it should take, it packs down as you slowly fill the
trench in)out and solar sterilize it too. Then replace 1/2 the soil into
the trench and mound the rest up. Let it sit for a year and sterilize
the trench again, and plant the asparagus out the second spring.

In the past I have used this method to great success. Asparagus
growers are always fighting grass, latent slugs, bugs and other creepy
things. This gives you a chance to do it right. Solar soil
sterilization is a wonderful thing, but it really does nasty thing to the
beneficial microbes in the soil. That is why the delay, as you really
want to sterilize the soil twice.

It sounds like a lot of work, but over the long haul I feel it is worth
it. Yields are high, pests are slight and weeding is a relatively
minor task.

Very truly yours, in growing delicious things, the fluffy bunny
