FW: What is with cucumbers!?!?!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hang in there Paula. I'm in the Seattle area of Washington, and we are just
starting to see things grow here too. I've cheated some this year for my
heat lovers and used a 6m plastic wrap (small version hot house) around the
tomatoes and peppers. They are 3-4 weeks ahead of some neighbor's plants.
The other summer crops are just trying to get in the groove now. My cucs are
about 2 feet tall (trellised). There are a few blossoms and a couple of
very small starts, but nothing compared to what the family has down in Texas
at this ponit. The zuccini and pumpkins are off to a slow start, just about
the size of the cuc vines too. Of course, I'm still enjoying fresh leaf
lettuce and peas, that have surely burned up down in the warmer climates by
now. It's hard to wait patiently for the warm weather stuff, so I just try
to enjoy the cooler weather stuff as long as I can as revenge. HAHA
Also, I've tried those lemon cucs two years in a row. The vines are slower
and seem more apt to mildew and disease. The biggest crop I think I
got per vine was 10. That's not much to write home about. I've found that
they don't keep well after being picked. They sure are a conversation piece
at lunchtime at work though. I'm not sure how close our weather patterns
are, but we've had cool days, then warm, then rainy, then HOT (high 80's),
but it always is cool (40-50's) at night. Just not what growing warm loving
plants thrive in. Somehow my sqr foot garden has always pulled through for
me. So give it another try. Cheat if you have to. Plastic barriers are
still organic and really work well with the sqrft method!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I have tried three times to get lemon cukes to grow from transplants and
again they are "biting the big one"!!!  I thought that these would be ok.  I
didn't over water and I shaded them so they wouldn't wilt in the hot sun
after I transplanted them and now half of them are all wilted keeling over.
We did have a few cool, moist days last week (not too cool) My stuped peas
that just wouldn't come up during the spring seemed to like it, maybe it was
too wet for cukes?  In fact my whole garden seems to be slow and stunted.  I
see others out there having all these harvests already and all my stuff is
just staring at me!  This is my first attempt at Sq. Ft. Gardening and I
really took pains this year.  I was better off when I just threw stuff in
the ground!  I love Sq. Ft. Gardening, maybe I just worried about everything
too much! But these cukes are the last straw.  I'm in Montana so maybe all
of you that are harvesting are in Florida or somewhere else south??  Help!
Any suggestions?  I did find really cool wire for cages, so if anyone's
interested I will e-mail that soon.

Thanks, Paula in Montana
