FW: zone 7 -- nonproductive veggie plants :

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Judy,
if your spot is getting light but not the direct "heat" of the sun, your
tomatoes and peppers may be slow to produce. i'd suggest using a barrier
around the plants or the area of the bed to keep more heat around the
plants. i use 6 weight clearish plastic sheeting around both my pepper beds
and tomatoes. i make it about 2 feet tall and support it with welded wire
fencing (horse fencing), but i bet chicken wire would work too. i secure my
plastic to the wire with recycled veggie ties. early in the season i make a
"roof" for these surrounds, but as it warms up enough, or they outgrown the
roof, as my tomatoes did 3 weeks ago (are all around 5 ft tall now). in the
seattle area where i live, our warm weather (80's) doesn't really show until
july, and only hangs out for a couple of months, so i have founf this to be
the best method to get the tomatoes and peppers to produce. this may save
your shaded bed, even this late in the game.

good luck,
Tristan

I'm in zone 7, right outside DC. I have a v. small sq ft. veggie
garden, fairly shady -- only partly sunny at best. It does get bright
light all day & full sun 2-4??? hours a day (4 is an exaggeration!).

I have 5 or so tomato plants, with a few blossoms on 2 of them. My
July 4 tomato plant isn't even waist high yet! (it's July 17). No
tomatoes!! I also have 6-8 pepper varieties/plants, with 3 small
pepper on *one* of the plants! Lots of blossoms on 2 or 3 other
plants. Also, basils & misc!

I know I have too much shade, but since my neighbor's tree is dying, I
thought perhaps enough of it had died to allow me to grow some
tomates! Should I just pull them at this point in the year & plant
something that will grow in the m-t squares?? What do you think about
the peppers?

TIA, Judy
