I had a big problem with earwigs this year also - ate many of my pole bean 
seedlings, lettuce seedlings and pumpkin.

At first I didn't know what it was.  I didn't think it was slugs but not 
knowing what to do, I put out little margerine tubs of beer and the next day 
they were full of earwigs.  Very ugly site but it seemed to be a solution.  
I've noticed a marked improvement in veggie growth.  The new leaves don't 
have holes in them and the old leaves don't seem to be getting any worse.

I've put out tubs since, but haven't really caught too many more.  Nothing 
like the first night.
