Re: Concrete block and RR ties

The first 2 beds I put in this year are concrete blocks. I planted herbs and 
flowers in the side pockets with tomatoes, bush beans, egg plants, and 
peppers on the insides. They have worked very well. I also have 4 vertical 
trenches (1x4 ea.) and 2 other 4 x 4 beds (not raised). I found I really have 
to water all of them about the same amount, depending on plant variety. We 
have had a drought going all summer and each of them have been very heavily 
mulched with about 10 in. of oat straw and get a good soaking every 2-3 days.
I am digging the trenches into full 4 x 4 beds for fall and would like to put 
RR ties around them but am worried about chemicals. Any info?
