Since a few people have asked me, I am copying this to the list.
I'm sorry, I thought I had recently talked about them on this
list. I
have a "square foot composting method" that starts with using 5 gal
buckets to pre digest my food scraps. I drilled several 1/4 inch holes
in the bottom, then I put in some dried grass clippings (2") on top of
that I put food scraps, some garden dirt with earthworms (1") then more
dried grass (1"). I layer like this for about a week or until it fills
the bucket then I set the bucket in the shade for a couple of weeks,
watering when I water my garden.
I use 4 buckets in rotation and every week empty one by
refilling a
square that I had been digging out for the dirt to put in the buckets.
The worms have turned the food and grass into firm black soil by then. I
have a good bit left over so I spread it around my plants and cover
everything with dried grass.
I have so many worms in my gardens! I use 12" raised beds but
the worms
have crawled out into the rest of the yard now making the soil around my
gardens almost as fertile as the beds...
And I get so much new soil that I have to make a new bed every
season
or so, I have 6 now and plan to end up with 18 ( 3 X 6 ) which will just
fill the only sunny spot in my yard with 2' paths in between.
