Margaret said that, >Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville, MD will be having a Tomato Tasting on >Saturday August 23,1997. From 11am-2pm >The store is located on Rte1 just north of Powder Mill Rd. I went to the tasting in '96 and was significantly disappointed. The Saturday session at the Beltsville location (about 4 miles from my house) offered only about 8 different varieties. I can recall Brandywine (hands-down best taste), Cherokee Purple, and Behnke's Belgian Giant from among the open-pollinated oldies and Dona, Celebrity, and Beefmaster or one of its clones on the hybrid side. There was something yellow but I don't recollect which at all. I'd already grown practically all these and was hoping for lots of unusual varieties. Behnke's sold at least 20 different tomatoes in '96, though their selection seemed much less broad this year. I'll probably go anyway though because I'm a tomato nutbag basically. Square Footers of the greater D.C. area, how about having a tailgate picnic in the Behnke parking lot and making a bunch of tomato sandwiches onsite and comparing tastes? I can bring some Mama Mias, Pink Brandywines, Heatwaves, Park's OG Whoppers, and St. Pierre's to fluff up the official choices. Picked my first Mama today, in fact. --Janet ------------------------------------------------------------------ Janet Wintermute jwintermute@ids2.idsonline.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send to: listserv@umslvma.umsl.edu the body message: unsubscribe sqft See http://www.umsl.edu/~silvest/garden/sqft.html for archive, FAQ and more.
