I don't see how you can go wrong rototilling in anything that is organic and
has not been treated with pesticides or herbicides.
Straw is OK but, there is not much mass for the volume.
When I visit in-laws in SW North Carolina I chat with the
cooperative extension agent there who is quite a fan of gypsum to lighten
up soil, but there are many kinds of clay, and you should get local
recommendations in this respect. Considerd a cover crop after you have
rototilled, and a soil test in the spring.
