In a message dated 98-07-24 02:03:55 EDT, you write: << The top 3/4 of the tomato looks fine, nice and red, however when you look at the bottom it is almost black. Has anyone seen this, is it a fungus or something else. >> It's blossom end rot, due to a calcium deficiency caused by uneven watering or damage to the feeder roots. Keep the soil around the plants evenly moist and check to make sure the ph isn't too low. Mulch around the plants will help keep the soil moist, but may bring slugs, a problem I have here in Boston. I've pretty much gone to using compost as a mulch instead of grass, straw or hay and the slug problem has been kept to a minimum. (going out every few nights with a cup of soapy water to drown the slugs helps also) Jim K
