The down side of string is birds may decide to use it for nesting 
material (as I found out this spring).  If you are using string, you 
may want to pound nails into your wooden dividers, if you are using 
them.  I attached the string to plastic plant markers and the birds 
took the string and the markers tool.

Another alternative is laying dowels or strips of wood.

Since I only want the dividers for planting until the plants are up, 
I plan on using crushed egg shells.  They end up losing their 
effectiveness (ie. getting incorporated into the soil) after several 
weeks, but did the trick in my hot season bed.
