First, let me say how glad I am that you're back. I've learned so much from
the posts of experienced gardeners/square footers like you and Bill and
many others.
Secondly, this is my first year sq. ft. gardening. I had already planted my
vegetable garden in my side yard by the time I finished the book, so I
applied the principles to my front beds, but I wanted to grow vegetables,
not flowers.
I wrote to the list asking for ideas about edible ornamentals and a lot of
people kindly replied (you were one of them, I think).
I had lots of length, but not a lot of depth, so I used 3X3 plots instead
of 4X4. And since I'm short, it works out better for weeding.
I planted 6 3'X3' squares with strawberries, 2 3'X3' squares with herbs, 2
3'X3' squares with peppers, 2 3X3 with a bush type squash and one with
mammoth sunflowers, one with Swiss Chard. It looks great! My husband, who
doesn't notice anything about the yard or garden was bowled over and my
father who's goal in life is to never be impressed by anything I do, was
completely awestruck at how beautiful something so useful was. It went over
so well in the neighborhood, I've shown several people the basic premise
and recommended they get the book.
The squash and sunflowers are almost over, so I'm looking for fall crops now.
Good luck in your new home and welcome back!
Lisa
