Sounds like a sooty mold to me. I know this can happen from whitefly
infestations and from aphid infestations. I believe this has to do with
the honeydew that these insects excrete. The ants feed of this and the
moldy stuff can grow. If so, I would think it's perfectly fine to eat
the leaves, just wash them well. Or, does anyone know of any fungal
disease that this might be? We don't have too many fungal problems
(except mildew and some black spot) here in so. cal. Yes, I consider
myself very lucky for that!

P.S. Just read in Sunset magazine, that if you see white whirled
patterns on any of your plants, that these are whitefly eggs. They
suggest you remove the leaf or wash each leaf with a strong spray of
water to dislodge the eggs. I found lots of these whirls (kind of like
a bulls eye pattern but not perfectly round) on my beet leaves.
