Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I have occasionally seen synthetic stuff advertised as a soil additive.
It's a gel that holds water and releases it very slowly. It's expensive,
and usually sold for potting soil. The idea is that you have to water less
often.
We went through a wicked drought this spring, and lost a number of plants to
dehydration, even with frequent watering. It would have been nice to have
soil that drained, but did not dry out.
I have even seen this material (I think it's the same stuff) sold in glass
jars as a sort of hydroponic medium. You grow houseplants in what looks
like red or green Jell-O.
Here's the big question: Isn't this the same as the stuff in disposable
diapers? Don't I throw away pounds of it every week, much of it N-riched
with urea and vitamins, but no other contaminants? Has anybody tried
tilling diaper goo into garden soil?
