Hi, Charlie,
I had a similar experience, although I used a plastic barrel with holes in 
the sides.  The leaves grew beautifully and I filled the barrel with soil and 
manure.  At the end of the season I got a handful of 1-inch (or less) 
potatoes.  What a disappointment.  This year I didn't bother.

Let me know if you find out any other "foolproof" potato growing methods. :-)
