Meanwhile, I contacted Plant Health Care, Inc., makers of Terra Sorb.  They
said their product (potassium polyacrylamide-acrylate) is OK for food crops.
Till 1 lb into every 100 sq ft.  It retails for $50 for 10 lbs.
