Glee,
In my original bed, I have herbs in some holes and short marigolds and sweet alyssum in others.  This bed, including the planted holes, has held up to this summer's hot, dry weather better than the rest of my yard.  (Which is why I decided to do another one.) I attribute this to having a lot of organic material in the bed which holds moisture well.  The only thing that's died on me is basil, which I do think needed more water than the other herbs.

Well, I've gone and done it.  DH and I went out this morning and bought 24 more cinderblocks so I can have another raised garden

the 'nursery lady' here warned me that plants in the holes in the cinder blocks will dry out real fast.  That succulents were about the only thing that does well there...?????
