Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
As a founder of this Square Foot Gardening listserv more than three years
ago, I feel more than entitled to post these comments. I came home from a
vacation to find that chaos has erupted on this list, because a member
passed along (probably unwittingly) a worm in the form of an execute file.
I did not open the attachment, because it is always my policy not to open
attachments unless I've requested them or know the person very well. Others
on this list, including a number of newer subscribers, have. Also, in going
through 10 days worth of email, I've noticed a pattern of non-gardening
chatter evolving. Here is what SQFT is:
We are a gardening forum about Square Foot gardening techniques. We also
cover containers and wide-beds, because the same SQ FT techniques apply. We
also cover fruit, diseases, pests and many other gardening subjects, because
our subscribers are not locked into SQ FT for everything. Our exchanges are
lively, sometimes humorous, but always educational. We cover every level of
experience--from the beginner to the pro. We have a reputation of helping
beginners, mentoring and nurturing.
To maintain these principles, stick to the above subjects and avoid the
following:
1. Do NOT include attachments. Many subscribers cannot open them, and in a
time of Internet terrorism, it's not prudent to open attachments. Plus,
attachments are slow downloading. Many subscribers still have slow modems,
slow ISP's and old phone lines. It's just good manners not to inconvenience
fellow list members.
2. Because of the above ISP, phone and computer limitations many
subscribers have, SQ FT post must NOT be in HTML form, have color and/or
stationary backgrounds or contain graphics. Remember, many list members are
MAC users or have old systems.
Let's drop the jokes, the silly chatter and talk about gardening again.
And, let's be considerate Web citizens.
