Sunflowers, Corn, and Scarlet Runner Beans

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Bill,

I think the scarlet runner beans are so very nice, they really are one
of the simplest of all veggies to grow, just pop the seeds in the ground
and they come up and grow very fast. I imagine that you could also grow
them on sunflowers, I think some of the real tall types like the Russian
Giant would look super excellent with them. Last year I had a garden
"accident" happen. Some volunteer morning glories (ipomea purpea)
germinated under a sowing of sunflowers, the MGs traveled right up the
stalks and looked so pretty. They bloomed at the same time the
sunflowers did. There's nothing like any type of vine to turn a yard
into a garden, it adds a vertical visual element that quite often is
just the right touch when something seems "missing".

My son helped me save our scarlet runner bean seeds last year and we had
a great time shelling them when they dried. Jason thought they looked
like magic beans, they're very shiny black with lavender markings. I
thought it was an appropriate comment because the beans are so simple to
grow successfully, they really are like magic.
