At the risk of discouraging you all beyond belief, remember that
fire-ant-killing chemistry can be termed "successful" only if it gets to
the queen and kills her. Killing the worker ants may reduce overall stings
quite a bit, but those closest to the queen just whisk her deeper into the
earthen mound when threatened. And then they fly away with her to found a
new colony if she's not killed in the chemical blitz.
This species is quite adaptive, too. There used to be just one queen per
mound, but since 1996 researchers have seen two-queen mounds.
Boiling water will kill fire ants, too....
