Re: This year's garden, rain, & drought, & grasshoppers

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Laura: Years ago I visited Florida. It rained every day of my vacation.
Now, back home in Texas it has rained every 3 or 4 days this month. We
definitely have not had to water. It is raining (flood warnings out) now
and about 68 degrees outside. Goodness, I could plant broccoli again,
except for the grasshoppers and fire ants!

I was gone for one week and because of all the good rains, my 9 tomato
plants are now about 6 foot tall and tomatoes everywhere. I am amazed ...
and very glad that grasshoppers do NOT like tomatoes, though they really
love everything else.

I am so frustrated that I bought a poison for grasshoppers, supposed to be
safe after 3 days, called "SpectracidePRO" and is 10% permethrin ...
whatever that is. Anyone have any thoughts? I HATE poisons! But losing
most of my garden is heartbreaking. Still, I do want to keep birds, worms,
and beneficial bugs. It has rained so much I have not had a dry time to put
out diatomaceous earth yet. Howard Garrett (The Dirt Doctor) also said to
try that. ... Nickie
