Yes salt will kill plants...they put it on our roads to melt the ice and the
run-off kills the grass, plants, etc.
You might try kettles of boiling water...that works, doesn't harm anything
except the ants...or get some Borax-found in the laundry detergent
isle...sprinkle on the hill liberally and it should work...it too isn't
harmful.
...ants aren't too big of a problem here unless they decide to come into the
house and most of our local ants aren't the biting variety (we have a small
population of red ants that bite...but most of ours are the big black
variety who only aerate the soil).
