I'd bet they were rotten on the bottom, the end opposite the stem. It's 
known as blossom end rot, and is due to a lack of calcium. Most soils are 
not deficient in calcium, but the plant can't take it up unless the soil is 
consistently moist. Not drenched, moist.  Check with your county extension 
agent about whether your soils are deficient in calcium, and what they 
recommend.  I water my tomatoes deeply once a week unless the temps top 
100, then it's every 3 or four days.  Margaret L
