>Maggie,
You can probably blame the nibbled lemon thyme on the cats. Some of my cats
like it better than catnip.
I put my tomato cages over newly planted rows to discourage the cats.
Unfortunately, once I've planted the tomatoes, I have nothing to use, but by
that time I have usually mulched the garden with straw which they don't
like. If I'm in the garden and see them digging, I spray them with the hose.
It doesn't have to be a strong spray since they hate being wet.
The catnip and lemon thyme I surround with chicken wire. The plants grow
through the wire, but the cats can't get at the core of the plant and
destroy it. This gives them something to enjoy.
I use to leave a small strip of soil so they would have a place to dig, but
I didn't do that this year. Hope I won't be sorry. I need my cats for mice
patrol and I enjoy their antics.
