Rhyan,

        I've had the same problem with peas.  I now wait until the peas are
starting to droop over from the weight ant then use jute twine to form the
trellis starting by winding the bottom strings on the outside of the peas,
thus drawing them upwards.  Then I continue the trellis up.  Once the
bottoms have been supported upright, the peas have no problem using the
rest of the strings to climb up.
