I am in the process of constructing a coldframe for growing salad greens in winter and hardening off transplants etc.. before setting out in the spring. My question is how deep should I dig it out?I am thinking 16" would be about right and then add 6-8 inches of growing medium. This would leave me 10" before the plants would hit the glass in the front. I have had trouble in the past with the plants hitting the glass and getting frostbitten as a result. I am wondering if a 10" depth would restrict the sunlight received by the plants. I am in zone 8 (33 by Sunset standards) and the coldframe faces south. Thanks for any and all advice.
