I saw Mike McGrath of ORGANIC GARDENING at their Gardenfest a few years back (it's really worth going to, by the way!) and he did a hilarious talk about animal urine and manure. It does seem that the scent of carnivores IS different from herbivores-- he was talking about it in terms of using urine, but I'd assume feces works the same way. By the way, I've generally seen it recommended that you age any sort of manure--otherwise it can burn your crops. Everyone is talking about how much they fertilize-- I haven't added extra stuff yet to my tomatoes. I used Mel's recommended technique of trenching. My husband dug out a one foot deep trench and we filled it with composted manure and that's where my tomatoes are. Every time they get watered, they get a drink of "manure tea "and they are flourishing. I bought some of the red plastic mulch, and it DOES seem to help the tomatoes and peppers--they look great. What it DOES NOT do is MULCH--the grass loves it. Next year, I put down black plastic and put the red on top of it. Lisa (Zone 7, Aleandria, VA) P.S. Shade fabric WORKS--I harvested peas despite the heat wave, and I still have hope for my cauliflowers!) *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send to: listserv@umslvma.umsl.edu the body message: unsubscribe sqft See http://www.umsl.edu/~silvest/garden/sqft.html for archive, FAQ and more.
