Onion tops

In late March/early April I planted some Vidalia sets. I planted some in my
garden and some in containers. The ones in the containers are fine, but the
ones in the garden didn't seem to be growing much. I noticed earlier in the
week there didn't seem to be as many onion tops as there had been and today
they were all gone. I am assuming a rabbit or some other critter got them.
My question is...will the onions under ground still grow or should I dig
them up and replant the space with something else? I'm going for full size
onions, not just "green" onions. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Any advice/help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Lisa
