I don't want to start another (in)organic war but I have done a very
unscientific experiment and would like to report the results.
I had a section of bed (new) with weeds (primarily creeping
buttercup, dandelions and lawn grass) growing at the back edge. I
decided to test the effectiveness of the two weed killers that were a
hot topic for discussion last month.
I sprayed the first 3 ft. with vinegar, the next 3 ft. with Wipe Out
(another brand of the same chemical in round up). The amounts of
either chemical were small, in line with manufacturer's instructions
and common sense (ie. a dandelion would get less than 1 tsp of
vinegar).
Results:
The vinegar sprayed weeds showed signs of decay within 24 hours. The
Wipe out sprayed weeds took several days longer. It has been about
1 month and neither set of weeds has returned. There was no
difference registered in my soil test kit for soil acidity (a very
crude test).
