I noticed no one has answered your post yet. I'll try to
help with my limited knowledge. I am growing Cowpeas aka
Purple Hull Peas this year for the first time. I think they
are similar to black-eyed peas.
As a young girl, I remember harvesting purple hull peas with
my mother and grandmother at a local u-pick farm. The pods
were purple/green mottled, almost dry and thin-skinned with
bulging peas. According to my seed package, it says the pods
can be allowed to mature and stay on the vine to have dried
peas.
I searched the web for black-eyed peas and couldn't find
anything. Maybe someone out there has some experience with
this and can help you.
I'll let you know if I find out any more information.
