Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hello,
I have been mainly lurking for a couple of weeks now. I introduced myself once briefly but thought I would share about our garden. I have never had a garden before but after reading Mel's book and moving to a farm felt we could
make a go of it.
We have 6 4x4 beds done exactly as he did in the book. I have used untreated rough cut lumber from a local sawmill (translate - cheap!) for our paths. I have one bed totally instrawberries.
We are also growing, broccoli, bibb lettuce, iceberg lettuce, chives, marigolds, silver queen corn, jalapenos, all varietes of bell peppers (green, red, yellow, chocolate, purple) sweet banana and hot banana peppers, sage,
nasturiams, borage, cilantro, celery, asparagus, dill, basil (other things too but can't remember right now :). On trellis we are growing, cherry tomatoes, butternut squash, pumpkins, canteloupe, string beans, salad tomatoes, yellow
squash, ambrosia melons, cucumbers, watermelon (get those pantyhose ready!) pickling cukes, milk pumpkins...all I can remember!
So far all are doing well. I love this method of gardening - as do my kids. Am learning a lot from all of you.
This week I will make some more squares and hope to add sweet potatoes, onions, red potatoes, white potatoes, and more herbs and flowers. We are just adding a little all the time. We got a late start because of our move from FL to
TN. I live in zone 6.
We do a lot of companion planting and so far haven't had any pest problems.
By the way - for strange gardening practices....anyone bothered by deer, go to your local zoo and request some lion scat (pooper dooper as my 5 year old calls it) and scatter around the perimeter - voila! no more deer and yes our
neighbors think we are strange! But mainly because we don't plant in rows :) It really works - some zoos are even packaging and selling the stuff!
Now for a question - anyone ever grown an egyptian onion? How did it do? Any suggestions? I bought one just because it looked so interesting - we homeschool and are always looking for "projects" for the kids.
Looking forward to learning from all you veterans :)
Cheri
