As we are small commercial growers we do not use strictly sqft methods
but everything is in raised beds. When planting leeks I have an old
spade handle that I have sharpened to a point and use as a dibbler making
a hole for each leek plant about six to ten inches deep in which the
leek is dropped into and watered but the hole is not filled in. As the
plant grows, with rainfall, watering and (I suppose) gravity the hole
gradually fills in and then later the soil is mounded around each plant
by about another inch or so.
Regards,
Noel.
