Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi All,
My husband and I moved into our first house last fall after years of
apartment dwelling. My only experience with growing plants has been with
spider plants, and that's not saying much. This year I'm anxious to put in
a vegetable garden (SQFT, course), and grow some annual flowers (some in
containers) while I sit back and see what the established perennial
beds/landscaping have to offer.
So needless to say, I have questions. This is the first of many:
A little over three weeks ago I started some slow growing annuals (violas,
pansies, snapdragons, lobelia) in cell packs. I thought that these would be
good experience for me before I got to the important seedlings - tomatoes!
I used Schlutz seed starting mix and have had them under lights since they
germinated. About a week ago I noticed some bright green "stuff" growing in
places and last night I've noticed a dark green colour on some of the cells.
Not all of them; maybe 30% of them.
I thought at first that this might be moss but someone on the newsgroup
rec.gardens thought that it might be algae. (My apologies for repeating
myself here.)
Either way, is this bad?
What, if anything, do I need to do about it? Do I need to remove it?
My setup is in the basement. Is it too cool downstairs (65F)? Is the green
"stuff" coming from something down there? The water? Watering too much? I
did water them with a weak solution of water soluble fertilizer when they
grew their true leaves . . .
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Debbie

"Peas, when do I plant peas?")
