>Well it must have been a freak of nature. It was a first year garden plot,
and it had several normal watermelons. However,(and I did see it) it looked
and thumped like a ripe watermelon, but had a light and definitely not sweet
flesh. Maybe the good Lord just had a sense of humor. Cindy
--------------------
The package seed could have been an errant cross, from a lucky pollen from far
away... or genetically, a "sport."
To avoid risk if you are tight on space and replant SOME of your own crops
seeds, which I do a little of, I pollinate these using a finger stuck into the
large flower, and wiggled. When done, I rinse well, or use a different hand
for a different crop. This is a daily chore, unless you pluck the flowers for
stir frys and salads. (Why are some bitter and some not? Anyone?)
As was said, when the seed is eaten, as in the case of corn, it then becomess
a big deal. I read, corn crosses tend to return to a less sweet, starchy
flavor... (noting this occurs anyway a very few days after pulling the ears,
anyway.)
But the main point here is:
____Did you cook the shell for a pie, turn it into a watemelon pickles (ahhh,
to die for!) or cut the flesh like a zuchinni and do a stir fry??? ReallY...!
Not sweet? Maybe on a salad then... BET it was good FOR you!
Bill
