I can't imagine growing these brassicas at 6 or even 4 per square foot, they
get big and are rather heavy feeders. I have seen them used in tight spacing
for salad greens but in that case, they are cut when very small.

I don't have the kind of cutworms that snip seedlings at ground level, I
have the type that climb up the stem and devour huge holes in leaves and
defoliate plants. They seem too busy chomping my ornamentals to bother with
the kale and collards. The only things that really bother mine are aphids
and in fall powdery mildew.
