Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Lasagna beds are really cool. They're raised beds and yo make them you
layer browns and greens from your garden. I used a lot of compost from
my pile for the browns, as greens are a bit hard to find right now
because I am not mowing the lawn yet I pruned most of my evergreens
giving me an abundance of green material.
There is a book by LANZA, called Lasagna Gardening and I really
recommend that you get it. It's similar to IBM beds but without the
burlap. You can plant in the immediately, the first one I made is lush
with transplanted strawberries and also holds my cane berries, the
strawberries are sort of an under planting. It's up against the Western
side of my garage and I am planning on putting up another string trellis
attached to the garage wall, verdicts out as to what I'll plant on it,
maybe some baby boos, loofas, and a few birdhouse gourds.....gotta do
something ornamental, they'll make some nice gifts for the holidays.
My mega bed, the largest of six, started out as this years mulch pile,
I layered up as a I built it alternating greens and browns (I love
composting and even bought worms for it and the other beds), it is a
"smart" pile. I have just to add about another layer of browns to one
end and it will be completed. It measures 15'L x 4.5'-5.5'W x 2.5'H. I
am planning on using it for tomatoes and peppers with some herbs and
marigolds, also maybe a few cukes running along under them.
By next week I'll have to make a new mulch pile again. I don't know if I
will layer it lasagna style again, I think I have enough veggie space as
is, but hubs thinks I can grow enough to donate to the foodbank......I
think he's looking at me "earning my keep" by making a tax write off in
addition to growing our own veggies. (He got a raise and I got to stay
home and become a housewife again) Oh joy........cook, maid, and tenant
farmer too %+(
