I have my compost pile on the edge of my lot "in suburbia".
I have bushes I transplanted to that corner of the yard, I trim
them but never remove them. For most of the year my neighbors
would only see a wall of green. My compost pile is in a
4x8 foot timbered raised bed, I always figured I would move
it from bed to bed in the future so the "drippings" would
enrich the bed.
Someone (sorry Don't remember who) mentioned making
their compost piles out of pallets and letting vining plants grow
up on the outside, excellant idea. Of if you are using the wire
cage compost pile like many of us do, leave a 6-12 inch air gap
and put up another wire cage and grow pretty flowers, or ugly
flowers if you don't like your neighbors... ; )
While my immediate neighbors cannot see my yard, my lot is
parallel to a 4 lane street. And everybody on the road can see
my whole backyard. I am going to put up a fence, (have a few
hundred 5-6 foot redwood 2x4s I acquired) I was going to put
up a solid vision stopping fence (who wants to look at the road)
but my wife does not want anything that imposing, she wants
something she can see through. So I am designing an
interesting lattice like patturn ,with large holes occassionly, to
be my fence. This will be 50% transparent (through the
the lattice holes) when looked at straight through (say from the yard)
but will appear solid when looked at at an angle (say driving by).
The larger "holes" probably 2 foot on a side are to hold
planters in summer and something seasonal the other times
of the year, say a carved pumpkin or some christmas lights...
(heres where it goes back to gardening...)
I also plan (read plan, have not done yet) to do Mel's trench
planting trick along the entire fence. (southern exposure)
and plant vining plants alternating between simple producers
like tomatoes and snow peas, and flowering vines like peas,
morning glory and moonflowers (have never planted the
latter two yet...)
You could try something like I envision just wrap it around
three sides of your compost pile, and let stuff grow...
As I drive around my town I have seen a number of places
where I was admiring someones garden and they would have
a small fence in plain sight (not unattractive really) to hide
their compost pile or trash cans.
So you could chose to look on this as a challenge rather
than a problem. One could even try to pull (stolen from
another thread) a "Martha Stewart" but don't go too far...
Good Luck. Ron Souliere
