Margaret- I think water off of a tin roof would be just fine. When you have collected the water simply let it cool/warm to air temperature if possible before using.

Oh, I'd let it sit in the barrell, the same as tap water which is too cool.  Yeah, that could be a concern though.  (I still don't know how my wife is going to take it when I tell her that she cannot just use the hose to water our garden...)
