The tire method is the tried and true method. Keep us posted on your success! 
 I have just put in a very large combination garden and orchard and I don't 
think the tire look would be the look I'm after.  If I can't find any more 
info on growing potatoes with the sqft. method then I too will be doing 
something similar to the tire example.  It will be with something like 
chicken wire wrapped in a circle and pile hay on top of the potatoes every
