>Wendy- You really WILL get so much more from this list if you read Mel's book- cover to cover- a couple of times-it takes a while for it all to sink in- people here do share their improvising and ideas that they have come up with that weren't included in the book- but the basic theme is an important one and it will be a lot easier for you to work with once the season starts rolling and things start happening fast( and they will!) if you are already very familiar with the book and how SQ foot works. The other thing that really helped me was to to to the archives and do a search- you can go to the sq foot garden page- and type in a key word or phrase and you will get all kinds of posts on what diiferent people did  for just about anything- from lighting sytems, irrigations systems, raised beds- etc- without having to wait for a response or for someone to tell you that you should have read it in the book.Believe me- whatever you are gonna ask- it has probably been asked before and there's lots of ideas in the archives. I have never had much money so my raised beds are made from used waterbed frames- . 12 by 2 inches - - pine  but who cares- I treated them with linseed oil and they will last long enough for me to be happy.I also collected used redwood benches and picnic tables- took them apart and stacked  the 6 by 1's to make raised beds.  These materials were throwaways destined for the garbage at neighborhood cleanup time. If I had my preferences- I would use cedar boards- expensive but beautiful and last a long time. I would never use pressure treased lumber or railroad ties becasue of the chemicals in them.  If you do a search on raised beds in the archives- you will come up with many patterns suggested and used by this clever bunch of folks.- but DO read the book. I can tell you from experience that it is faster than waiting for an answer if you are in a hurry and if you are serious about  sq ft gardening then you should consider it required reading-especially if you already have the book. I had it for years before I read it and when I found this forum- it inspired me to open it up. Good luck-Teri
Greetings,
> I have had the Sq foot gardening book for few years and have only been dreaming of using this tecnique. We live in Middle Georgia I am not sure of my zone. I have HOT summers and some freezing in the winter. I would like to know how to start. What kind of wood do I use to make the 4x4 sq raised beds? We have clay here in GA, thus I am planing on making the soil Mel tells us about in the book. thanks and I am happy to have found this list.
