As an alternative use those plastic rose collars (doubled) then stacked to 
make a vertical column.  Just snap 2 together in a circle
(@1 1/2ft diameter and 1 ft high)   
   ...plant 2 - 3 seed potatoes in the center (evenly spaced), cover with 
soil about 1 inch deep.  When the plants reach over the top of the 
collar...fill in the area with shredded bark mulch, leaving about 3 inches 
uncovered, stack the next set of collars on top (wedge it inside the first 
set) ...keep going as the plants grow.  I got up to 3 - 4 levels last year.  
When the greenery dies back...just pull away the collars and sweep away the 
mulch..nice clean taters....

I'm getting ready this weekend to add some more soil mix to my raised 
beds....I built new beds last year....10 inches deep...between settling and 
the plants, the beds ate all but about 5 inches of the soil...

Let's see...temps in the 50s in the day..but about 30 at night.... 
peas...lettuce...spinach...broccoli........hmmmmm what else
