I use three ring tomato cages (pretty useless for tomatoes) over new
transplants, and clothespin newspaper over the top so that the plant is
shielded from overhead sun, but receives evening and morning sun. Usually
I've hardened the plants off for a few days before I do this. Once the
plants have taken hold (tomatoes change color), I remove those cages and
use them as permanent cages over brittle garden plants such as peppers and
eggplants. Margaret L
