Re: Tomato varieties (more:)


I have to put in my .02 for Stupice.  I think they are the absolute BEST
tomato for drying.  Really wonderful.

You will love Southern Night--it's a potato-leaf determinate, which is
interesting in itself.  And, the flavor is terrific.  The plants are
very productive.  I got 155 fruit from one plant in 1996.  I saved the
seeds and sent them to Texas A&M to trial as fall tomatoes.  They reported
the same huge crop statistics.  But, it is difficult for many
to get past the color of the tomato in order to enjoy it
and A&M felt it wasn't a good commercial variety.  I also grew
Black Krim in my '96 garden.  It did very well--looked almost identical
to Southern Night, except it had a navel at the blossom end.  Krim
is indeterminate and does not produce as heavy a crop as SN.  I found
the taste of both to be nearly identical.  Great White did just OK for
me in '96.  Of course, beefsteak types have a hard time with our heat.
Let us know about your results.  It's alway interesting to hear about
heirlooms.
