The columnade type of apple tree is a short spur variation that does
not produce very many apples. You might get four to six a season.
And short spurs are very disease prone. This info comes from
Vern Nelson, an apple and antique fruit specialist in Portland, Oregon.
He writes a weekly column in the PORTLAND OREGONIAN newspaper called
the Edible Landscape or something like that. I've never read the
column (I live in Texas), but I've interviewed him for several
magazine articles on fruit trees. He can't say enough bad things about
columnade trees. For what it worth----!!!
