Re: Tomato varieties for taste.

Hi Janet & all:

I've looked in ALL of my seed catalogs (and I've been inundated with
them this year -- not complaining, mind you!) and don't find your
'Mama Mia'. Drat -- it sounds like one I'd like, too. I don't have
Tomato Supply Co.'s catalog, though, so maybe there is still hope ...
anybody?? If no success with MM, I'm thinking about going for either
'Milano' (hyb. plum, 63 days, determinate, disease-resistant, 'rich
tomatoey taste') or 'San Remo Sauce' (hyb. indeterminate, 76 days,
disease-resistant, 'tasty flesh with high sugar') -- both listed on
p. 86 of the current Shepherd's Seeds catalog. Has anyone had
experience with either or both of these tempting-sounding toms??

I, too, have been enjoying _Taylor's Guide to Heirloom Vegetables_ --
great photos, great information. Have GOT to get some seeds of the
astounding Rainbow Chard! (Now *that* would be a sight growing as a
border in your concrete blocks, wouldn't it?? Your Spousal Unit might
never recover! Mine has a 'thing' about these wonderful planters, too
-- haven't been able to figure out why; I think they're pretty
innocuous-looking, myself.) Does anyone know if the Seed Savers
Exchange is offering it yet? Shepherd's lists 'Heirloom Joseph's
Coat' chard that is from Australia and sounds a LOT like 'Rainbow',
so I guess I'll just have to order some and find out. Speaking of the
Taylor's Guide (and the reason I brought it up; brain-fade strikes
again) -- the 'Amish Paste' tomato they recommend on pg. 287 *is*
carried by Totally Tomatoes, if you think that might be an acceptable
substitute in case 'Mama' never turns up.

According to the current Southern Exposure Seed Exchange catalog
(another gem!!), there is a tomato newsletter available called 'Off
the Vine' that might be a source of information about 'Mama' -- 3
issues/yr., $7 ($8 Canada), from 21-2 Latham Village Lane, Latham, NY
12110. Good luck in the continuing search!

Happy trails.....

     Sue
