Well, since all the other silent members are introducing themselves and expressing their appreciation of the wealth of the list's collective knowledge, I'll do the same. Small introduction: I live in Martinez, California, which is approximately 25 miles north-east of San Francisco (map distance, not driving distance). I'm 26 and until last year had been a strictly indoor gardener. I bought my first house on Halloween 1995 and have been gardening wholeheartedly ever since. The front yard was fully landscaped, but the backyard was bare with the exception of some very hardly groundcover, some honeysuckle and a few fruit trees. It's a small yard, but I've managed to do quite a bit. I tried starting a vegetable garden last year, but the soil was really in terrible shape and the water situation was pitiful. This past month I finally built three raised beds (5' x 8' x 1' each) and I'm currently in the process of installing my drip irrigation. The seeds have all arrived and I have the entire vegetable garden planned out on paper. Many thanks to all of you who have been sharing your experiences and advice. I've already learned so much! I've made a few minor adjustments to my plans and am more enthused the closer I can to planting season. I wish I had some specific questions in mind, but I'm sure I'll come up with some in the near future. ********************** Shannon Dorsey Zone 9: Martinez, California Shannon.Dorsey@ucop.edu
