At any rate, when I laid out the two boxes that I've planted so far I used
nails and plain twine to make a grid. Since our boxes are 4'x12', I found
it really useful in keeping track of where I was direct seeding (something
I didn't do such a good job of last year and had resulting problems when it
came around to figuring out what to weed). Have others found this sort of
thing useful? Since this is a school garden that I'm working in, labeling
for people to look at the garden is a goal. Does anyone have a creative,
more permanent, but still changeable/portable way of marking their garden
squares? TIA

If you are using lumber as edging you can notch the tops at 1' invervals and
use lattice/lathes to mark out the area needed....drill holes in the lattices
at 1' increments for pegs/ties and connect them as needed, that way you can
mark every 1' or 2' ,3', etc. You can also connect them together for the
longer dimensions of your bed. I suggest painting them a nice bright white
or yellow( you can also tie tags to the lattices to help ID whats in each
square.
Hope this isn't too confusing(I don't always explain too well) ô]~
