I live in Mesa, AZ. USDA zone 9, Sunset zone 13. Most of the time we have
a dry heat.

Actually, I don't have much experience either, this is my second year
square footing it, but yes, the lettuce I am growing for seed is set up
in the sqft style. The tomatoes are planted close together, to shade each
other--the buddy system. I hand pollinate the tomatoes early in the season.

I don't mind sharing, I just don't want to bore the other readers to tears.
The two that I crossed are Glacier and Earlirouge, both were setting fruit
in our hot weather. I have started the seeds from that cross, F1's, according
to Carole Deppes book on plant breeding, I can start seeing alot of different
tomatoes in the F2 generation....if I read that part right. I am also going
to save some seed from some hybrid tomatoes, so I can dehybridize them,
for my own purpose, not to sell. It's turning out to be a very interesting
hobby. Anyway, that's about all I have to tell for now, this is only my
second year into my "breeding program":). To all of the other readers, I
apologize for the off topic.
