I got those plastic stakes too (the ones to write the plant names on).
I also got a little pre-filled planter that has 36 separate sections
full of nice potting soil--what the heck, it was only a few bucks, and
I figure the easier this gardening thing is the more likely I'll stick
with it.

I've planted tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower in it. I
just got four clean margarine tubs and soaked three to five seeds in
each one overnight, then poked them into the dirt. So far every
single seed has sprouted, with the exception of the peppers--I don't
know if they just take longer than the others, or if I just managed to
hit on three bad seeds out of the packet by sheer bad luck. I'm going
to give them another couple of days and then try planting some more...

But anyway, just soaking them in a clean cup of water seemed to work
for me. This pre-filled thing has nice, rich, loose dirt which
appears to be highly favored by the sprouts. (I got it at Home Depot,
in case anyone else wants to have a look.)

I'm quite excited about the whole thing--this is my first attempt at
gardening, and already I have things GROWING.
