The standard spacing is 1 per square foot, but 3 per 4 square feet (16") is
something i'd like to try. The reason is the broccoli leaves grow beyond the
square's boundaries and are quite broad; i've had new plantings in squares
to the north of the broccoli suffer due to shadows.
