snails arggggggggggg

HELP!!!
Over night my garden was devastated by snails from hell (where do they come
from anyway?? There was no sign of them til last night)

Any ideas (we have neighborhood cats around) that won't kill me or the cats?

Also: I just caught the tail end of a Jerry Baker gardening show... looked
like he had lots of homemade concoctions for garden pests. Anyone know of him?
